 How do ECR's transition into commercial and museum sectors post-PhD? We will be hosting an exciting day of career talks and experiences from guest speakers in commercial and museum sectors. We  also begin the day with a Mental Health & Wellbeing session delivered by the University of Glasgow PGR Mental Health Adviser!

Join us at 10am on Sunday 28th March for our Wellbeing session with our own @UofG Mental Health & Wellbeing Campaigns Adviser and PGR Mental Health Adviser, Suzie Shapiro! Suzie will be discussing PGR wellbeing and mental health including key techniques we can apply ourselves including how we can identify and cope with anxiety, procrastination, schedules, and routines when returning to our lab research post-lockdown! There will also be Q&A time at the end of the session! PGR wellbeing and mental health is more important than ever and we hope you that everyone will benefit from this session!

Curator of Human Osteology

Jelena Bekvalac, BA Hons, MSc, FSA is a Curator of Human Osteology at the Centre for Human Bioarchaeology, Museum of London, and has been at the Centre since its establishment with funding from the Wellcome Trust in 2003. Prior to becoming a Curator in 2008, Jelena was a research osteologist within the osteological team based at the Centre and was part of the team for the Wellcome Skeletons: London’s Buried Bones exhibition in 2008 and the regional travelling Skeletons exhibitions 2016 -2018. Jelena has worked on archaeological excavations and projects with skeletal remains in England and abroad in Jordan, Russia and the Czech Republic as well as the extraordinary Spitalfields Market excavation. As a curator at the Centre for Human Bioarchaeology, the role is varied and interesting, caring for the extensive skeletal assemblages; working on exhibitions, assisting researchers, participating in outreach events and research projects. The focus of study for last four years being the collaborative research project, The Impact of Industrialisation on London Health. Areas of particular interest include palaeopathology, radiography and post-medieval bioarchaeology.

Dr Matthew C. Go

 Strengthening Links between Academia, Commercial and Museum Sectors 


Dr. Matthew C. Go is a forensic anthropologist currently working at the U.S. Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. He earned his MA and PhD in anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and completed his undergraduate training in archaeology, biological sciences, and forensic studies from Simon Fraser University. Matthew is primarily engaged in the applications of anthropology and archaeology to medicolegal issues involving human skeletal remains. His regional focus has been advancing both the research and professional practice of forensic anthropology in the Philippines. Ancillary interests include human anatomy, bioarchaeology, ecological and evolutionary biology, and entomology. Matthew’s work has been published in a number of scientific journals and is the recipient of numerous awards, including fellowships from the U.S. National Institute of Justice and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. He was a Visiting Scientist with the Forensic Anthropology Unit at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and co-editor of Forensic Anthropology’s special issue showcasing East and Southeast Asia. Apart from his work in the Philippines, he has excavated and analyzed human skeletal remains from the United States, Canada, Peru, and China.

Chioma Vivian Ngonadi

Strengthening Links between Academia, Commercial and Museum Sectors 


Chioma Vivian Ngonadi is an archaeologist from Nigeria with an interest in African Archaeology especially plant food production and pottery. She has a BA (Hons) in Archaeology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and an MA in Archaeology from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Her PhD thesis at the University of Cambridge as a Gates scholar focuses on plant food production and subsistence practices among the early iron using communities in Lejja, Nigeria. She is a member of the editorial team of the Society for Archaeological Science Bulletin, is one of the founding member of the Society of Black Archaeologists and Allied (ESBAA) and a lecturer at the Department of Archaeology, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. From 2016 to present, Chioma has been actively involved in projects related to science communication and public engagement activities in archaeology.

Ms. Jeannette Plummer Sires

Strengthening Links between Academia, Commercial and Museum Sectors  


Ms. Jeannette Plummer Sires: Jeannette is a bioarchaeologist with a specialism in human osteology. She is currently a Project Curator of Archaeological Assemblages at the British Museum. She has a BAs in Anthropology and Classical Archaeology from the City University of New York – Hunter College. Jeannette went on to specialise in human remains earning an MSc Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology from the University of Sheffield. Jeannette completed a two-year internship at the Vertebrate Palaeontology Department at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. She has five years of commercial archaeology experience across England and Wales, as well as international field research experience in Iceland, Antigua and Barbuda, and Orkney.

Ethics and Archaeology in the UK


David I. Connolly MIfA; FSAScot; Member of Historic Environment Forum Member of Federation of Archaeological Employers


David has a long-standing career in the profession, having worked professionally in archaeology since 1981, initially as a field archaeologist in York and around the UK and later as a draughtsman and surveyor. One of the pioneers of buildings archaeology and digital recording as well as a qualified drone pilot.  He also works across the Near and Middle East.

He has been a Council Archaeologist, Project Manager and Consultant, with wide interests in Scotland and beyond.  Within the commercial archaeology circles, he is well regarded for his advocacy for archaeologists’ rights, and he sits on the board of a number of charitable schemes, such as Enabled Group and Breaking Ground Heritage.  He also co-founded the RESPECT campaign.

David devotes his time to running of BAJR and its fieldwork arm, CHC Heritage, carrying out or participating in a varied UK commercial and research/training projects (e.g. Rampart Scotland). David is also the creator of the Archaeology Skills Passport.  David regularly lectures on archaeology skills and employment at UK Universities and on varied archaeology topics to local societies and wider public. He is a regular contributor and presenter on BBC Radio and acts asa consultant for archaeology articles.  In his spare time, he does like to walk -  often too far!
